Eloy Room's 15 Saves: The Curacao Goalkeeping Record, Explained

Ecuador took 27 shots. Fifteen of them were on target. Curaçao — a Caribbean island of about 156,000 people, playing their first World Cup match week — did not concede any of them.

On 20 June 2026 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, 37-year-old goalkeeper Eloy Room made 15 saves in a 0–0 draw, and earned his country its first ever World Cup point. He was named player of the match, the first Curaçaoan ever to receive it.

Source: Opta Analyst. Fox News reported 10 shots on target; Opta's 15 is the figure consistent with 15 saves and is the one to use.

An xG of 3.05 conceded, and zero goals actually conceded, is an overperformance of just over three goals in a single match. That is close to the ceiling of what a goalkeeper can contribute to one result.

Ten of Room's 15 saves came from inside the penalty area — the shots with the highest conversion probability. Ecuador's 15 shots on target was the most by a South American side in a World Cup match since 1966, and the most in any men's World Cup match without a goal in the same period.

The record question: is it 15 or 16?

Most coverage said Room "equalled the record". Some said he fell one short. Both were written in good faith, because the reference point itself is disputed.

The benchmark is Tim Howard for the United States against Belgium on 1 July 2014. Sources split:

Opta, ESPN, Sky Sports15Room equals the all-time record
CBS Sports, Fox News, popular record16Room is one short

There is a detail that resolves most of the argument. The 2014 USA–Belgium match went to extra time. Room's 15 came in 90 minutes plus stoppage.

So the accurate statement, which holds under either count, is this: Eloy Room set the record for most saves in a World Cup match that did not go to extra time. The previous regulation-time high was Ramón Quiroga's 14 for Peru in 1978. Whether he also equals Howard's all-time figure depends on which data provider you accept.

One further note on sourcing: CBS's write-up described Howard's 16 as a record "in the tournament" rather than in a single match, and dated the start of official save records to 1996 rather than 1966. Both are errors in that piece.

Who Eloy Room is

Room was born on 6 February 1989 and came through the Dutch system, playing for Vitesse and PSV Eindhoven before moving to Major League Soccer with Columbus Crew. At the time of the Ecuador match he was playing for Miami FC in the USL Championship — the second tier of American football.

That detail is the story, in a way the "veteran keeper" framing misses. A second-division goalkeeper produced a performance at the outer limit of what has been recorded at a World Cup, against a Copa América-level attack.

How the smallest nation ever got there

Curaçao qualified on 18 November 2025 with a 0–0 draw away to Jamaica in Kingston, topping CONCACAF third-round Group B unbeaten ahead of Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and Bermuda. That earned direct qualification — no play-off.

With a population somewhere between 156,000 and 158,000 depending on the source, they became the smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup by both population and land area, passing Cape Verde, who had qualified about five weeks earlier. For scale: that is a national population smaller than most mid-sized cities, drawing on a player pool largely built from the Dutch football system through Curaçao's constitutional relationship with the Netherlands.

How the tournament ended

Ivory CoastL 0–2

The 7–1 defeat to Germany is the honest counterweight to the romance. Across three matches Curaçao were outclassed twice and produced one of the great individual goalkeeping displays in the tournament's history. Both things are true, and the point they earned was earned almost entirely by one man.
