Daredevil Couple Climbs the Empire State Building — and Gets Engaged at the Top
In one of the most jaw-dropping stunts New York City has seen in years, a couple scaled the Empire State Building this week and reached the very top of its transmission tower — then made the moment even more memorable by getting engaged more than a thousand feet above the streets of Manhattan.
The pair have been identified as Ivan Kuznetsov, 32, and Angelina Nikolau, 33, a Russian-born couple now living in New Jersey. They are widely known online as the "Skywalkers," a nickname earned through a long history of climbing some of the world's tallest structures without ropes or safety equipment. The two previously gained international attention after being featured in a Netflix documentary chronicling their ascent of Malaysia's Merdeka 118 Tower, one of the tallest buildings on the planet.
According to authorities, the couple worked their way to the top of the Empire State Building's antenna, which broadcasts radio and television signals across the region. Officials noted that climbing the tower while it was actively transmitting carried serious risks, including possible exposure to radio waves, and the building temporarily shut down the antenna as a precaution.
Nikolau documented the adventure on social media in real time, sharing images that included Kuznetsov dropping to one knee to propose, and Nikolau holding up her ring while gazing across the glittering skyline below. The romantic gesture, set against one of the world's most famous backdrops, quickly captured the internet's attention.
The stunt did not end quietly. Both were arrested and charged with a lengthy list of offenses, including burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, and disorderly conduct. Witnesses described seeing the couple, dressed head-to-toe in black, calmly escorted out of the building in handcuffs without resisting arrest.
While the engagement made for a striking story, it also reignited debate about the dangers and legality of "rooftopping." For now, the couple's high-altitude proposal stands as an unforgettable — if reckless — chapter in their daring partnership.
